Czech Background

Formerly known as Czechoslovakia, the Czech Republic started its independent way through the Velvet Revolution in 1989, after a 40-year period of communism and USSR oppression. Separated from Slovakia in 1993, the Czech Republic now has the population of over 10 million people and Prague as its capital. With 3 main geographical regions of Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia, the country is well known for its historical figures of Saint Wenceslas and King Charles IV – the founder of Charles University, Gregor Mendel - the founder of modern science of genetics, film director Milos Forman, ice-hockey player Jaromir Jagr and the Wimbledon champions Ivan Lendl and Petra Kvitova. Czech Republic is also the right place to get the best beer in the world – the original Pilsner. As a part of the West Slavic language group, Czech language gives parents all over the world the chance to choose a child’s name of Proto-Slavic ancestry, profound etymology and softly melodic pronunciation!
